It is estimated that 200,000 children are affected by parental imprisonment across England and Wales. Lincolnshire Action Trust works with children visiting several local prisons to help them overcome the shame and isolation that can be experienced due to having a parent in custody. These children can serve a 'hidden sentence', the impact of which can be significant. Children with a parent in prison are:
- twice as likely to experience mental health problems, and less likely to do well at school
- three times more likely to be involved in offending themselves
We work with similar organisations across the country to develop best practice in this area and ensure that the voice of these children is heard.
