Did you know that around 16% of adults (approximately eight million in the UK) have taken part in formal volunteering at least once a month in the last 12 months?
National Volunteers’ Week celebrates and recognises the contributions of volunteers, and this year's theme Volunteers Make Waves emphasises the power of their time, skills, empathy and creativity to impact communities positively.
According to the Community Life Survey published in December 2024, the biggest motivators for volunteering are “to improve things/help people” (47%), “having spare time” (32%) and “the cause was really important to me” (30%).
Volunteers have a powerful and positive impact on the people they work with, and at Lincolnshire Action Trust (LAT) we see that impact every single day.
For us, volunteering is more than just giving your time. It's about offering support, creating hope, and helping people involved in the criminal justice system to rebuild their lives. Whether you're lending a listening ear, supporting a group session, or simply being a positive presence, your contribution can change someone's path for the better.
Volunteering with LAT is about personal growth and development too. Many of our volunteers say that their experience has helped them to build confidence, gain new skills, understand and connect with others and feel a renewed sense of purpose.
Whether you're looking to give back, gain experience, or be part of a meaningful cause, LAT offers a supportive environment where your contribution truly matters.
We offer volunteering opportunities across various locations in Lincolnshire, both in prisons and in the community.
If you're considering volunteering with LAT, here are some insights from one of our dedicated volunteers:
Volunteer Spotlight – Group Volunteer:
- When did you start volunteering?
“I started volunteering with Lincolnshire Action Trust in October 2024 and it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience ever since.”
- What motivated you to start volunteering?
“I wanted to use my own lived experience of the criminal justice system to support others on their journey and, in doing so, gain more confidence in myself. I know how powerful it can be to simply have someone listen, understand, and not judge.”
- What does a typical day look like for you as a volunteer?
“I regularly attend our Women’s Service and Women RISE group sessions across Lincolnshire. I welcome those attending and offer hot drinks to help create a warm, relaxed atmosphere. I quietly check in with women who may seem anxious or withdrawn, making sure they know someone is there for them without pressuring them to talk. Whether I’m taking part in a themed activity or simply chatting with someone who needs to get something off their chest, I always aim to create a safe and supportive space.”
- What has been the most rewarding and memorable moment since becoming a volunteer?
“Some of the most rewarding moments are also the simplest. When a woman hugs me as she leaves group, or when someone opens up to me for the first time, it reminds me why I do this. There is no judgement and no shame, just mutual respect and understanding.”
- What skills have you gained from volunteering?
“Volunteering has given me confidence, not just in myself, but in my ability to speak openly about my past. Being honest about my own experiences has created real connections with others who are on their own journey.”
- Are you able to balance volunteering with other commitments?
“Volunteering fits well around my other commitments. In fact, I look forward to it. The connections I’ve made and the sense of purpose I get from helping others have become a really valuable part of my life.”
- What would you say to someone considering volunteering?
“If you’re thinking about volunteering, do it! It’s one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done. It keeps me grounded and reminds me that none of us is alone. We all have struggles, and in these groups, everyone’s voice matters.”
If you are inspired by this story and are interested in volunteering with Lincolnshire Action Trust we would love to hear from you! Whether you have lived experience, professional skills, or simply a passion for helping others, there is an opportunity for you here.
Together we can continue to create safe, supportive spaces where every voice is heard and every story matters.
